NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

CLIENT: Metnor Construction

VALUE: £48m

Adelphi Director, Bruce Horsburgh, led a team of engineers and technicians in the civil and structural design of several new build, multi-storey, student accommodation blocks on the edge of Newcastle city centre. The buildings comprise multi-storey steel frames supported by reinforced concrete piled foundations. Piled substructure was required because the site lies over the now infilled Ouse Burn valley, has a Northumbrian Water sewer at a depth of 22m, and is above old mine workings.

Adelphi has significant experience of developing solutions to structures built over mine workings. The works also included design of a piled tower crane base.

As well as en-suite student rooms, the buildings provide mixed use, such as leisure, health, retail, commercial and parking facilities. The design and drawing package was delivered to a high standard in a tight timescale, expertly overseen by Bruce.

The above project was carried out whilst working for Patrick Parsons Consulting Engineers
