KINGSTON UPON THAMES

CLIENT: Metnor Construction

VALUE: £19m

Adelphi Director, Bruce Horsburgh, was responsible for the design of this new £19m ViBe student block in the heart of Kingston, Surrey. His role covered management of the engineers and technicians working on the project, through to site inspections and attendance at meetings for this multi-storey steel framed structure. Originally, scheme design was for a concrete frame; however Bruce was able to save a considerable sum for the client by redesigning the structure as a steel frame.

The building is bound on three sides by roads and has a basement which necessitated the design and installation of a sheet pile wall. Two attenuation tanks for foul and surface water had to be incorporated into the basement to cater for a very tight discharge allowance imposed by Southern Water. A piled base for a 62m tower crane was designed; the height being necessary to allow the carne to traverse over a neighbouring ten storey residential block.

The above project was carried out whilst working for Patrick Parsons Consulting Engineers
